📍 Population – young and family-oriented area

In Montreal, the highest proportion of families with children (46%) is found in the North of the West Island. Except for Sainte-Geneviève (31%), where the proportion aligns with the Montreal average, other northern sectors stand out for their strong presence of families with children, making up nearly half of all households. The proportion of children aged 0 to 17 is also higher in the North (21%) than in Montreal (19%). In absolute numbers, Pierrefonds-Roxboro has the largest child population (14,860 children).

👵 People living alone and seniors living solo – less common than in Montreal, except in Sainte-Geneviève

9% of residents and 23% of seniors live alone in the North of the West Island, significantly lower than the Montreal averages (19% and 37%, respectively). However, Sainte-Geneviève stands out as the only sector in the entire West Island North where the rate of people living alone (22%) exceeds the Montreal average. Among seniors, this rate rises to 47%, compared with 37% in Montreal.

Across the North of the West Island, where 7,665 low-income residents live, only Sainte-Geneviève has a rate above the Montreal average (13% vs. 11%). In the three other northern sectors, rates range from 5% to 6%. Pierrefonds-Roxboro is home to 56% of all low-income residents in the North of the West Island.

🌎 Immigrant population – preferred settlement area in the North of the West Island

39% of the population in the North of the West Island is immigrant (53,205 people), a rate higher than both the Montreal average (33%) and that of the South of the West Island (27%, or 26,475 people). Dollard-des-Ormeaux (40%) and Pierrefonds-Roxboro (41%) have the highest rates, with nearly 91% of the North’s immigrants living in these two areas (19,380 and 28,780 people, respectively). The North of the West Island is characterized by long-established immigration: a large proportion of immigrants have been living in Canada for more than five years. The Sainte-Geneviève neighborhood, however, stands out with a higher share of recent arrivals: 23% of immigrants there have been in Canada for less than five years.

👨🏾‍🤝‍👨🏼 Diversity – notable in the North, especially in Pierrefonds-Roxboro

44% of residents in the North of the West Island (59,190 people) belong to a visible minority group, a rate well above the Montreal average (38%). Among the three sectors, Pierrefonds-Roxboro stands out with a higher proportion (48%) and a considerably larger population (33,305 people).
