We\u2019re on a tight budget, so this lets us get ready for back to school and see what we still need. This year, we might be able to get away with just buying new scissors. It makes a huge difference.\u201d<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-right\"><em>\u2014Sakya Kmakondi, mother who works for a community agency.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:29px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Agencies are seeing more and more families in the same situation. \u201cWith the cost of so many things skyrocketing, it&#8217;s even harder this year,\u201d says Joelle McNeil Paquet, executive director of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.centraide-mtl.org\/en\/?post_type=organization&amp;p=7392\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">L\u2019Antre-Jeunes de Mercier-Est<\/a>, a community agency that helps mainly young people and families living in social housing. This year, Regroupement Partage expects&nbsp;the&nbsp;numbers&nbsp;to be higher still.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:21px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.centraide-mtl.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Separateur_corpo_1-1.png\" alt=\"S\u00e9parateur bonhommes Centraide\" class=\"wp-image-44527\" width=\"433\" height=\"60\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.centraide-mtl.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Separateur_corpo_1-1.png 609w, https:\/\/www.centraide-mtl.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Separateur_corpo_1-1-300x42.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 433px) 100vw, 433px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Joelle McNeil Paquet points out that in addition to new school supplies, school also means other expenses such as hot lunches and school daycare. <strong>\u201cWhen you have five kids and an atypical work schedule, after-school childcare really adds up,\u201d she says. \u201cSome people might be surprised to see an 11-year-old big sister taking care of her younger siblings after school, but many of these families don&#8217;t really have any other options.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading is-style-little-title\"><strong><strong>But financial stress isn\u2019t the only challenge parents are facing this fall.<\/strong>&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"vtx-tabs-nav\"><ul class=\"vtx-tabs-nav__inner\"><li class=\"vtx-tabs-nav__item\"><button class=\"vtx-tabs-nav__trigger\" aria-controls=\"tab-strongstrongacademic-delays-strong-strong\" role=\"tab\"><strong><strong>Academic delays<\/strong><\/strong><\/button><\/li><li class=\"vtx-tabs-nav__item\"><button class=\"vtx-tabs-nav__trigger\" aria-controls=\"tab-strongstrongmore-young-people-at-risk-of-dropping-out-strong-strong\" role=\"tab\"><strong><strong>More young people at risk of dropping out<\/strong><\/strong><\/button><\/li><li class=\"vtx-tabs-nav__item\"><button class=\"vtx-tabs-nav__trigger\" aria-controls=\"tab-strongstrongprioritizing-the-integration-of-immigrant-children-strong-strong\" role=\"tab\"><strong><strong>Prioritizing the integration of immigrant children<\/strong><\/strong><\/button><\/li><\/ul><\/div>\n<div class=\"vtx-tabs\">\n<section class=\"vtx-tab-item\" id=\"tab-strongstrongacademic-delays-strong-strong\"><div class=\"vtx-tab-item__inner\">\n<p>The educational and community sectors are seeing the after-effects of the Covid-19 lockdowns, which are especially pronounced for children with special needs. \u201cWe see the children throughout the year and their needs are becoming more complex,\u201d says Sylvianne Gagn\u00e9, coordinator of member services at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.centraide-mtl.org\/en\/?post_type=organization&amp;p=7538\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Association de parents de l\u2019enfance en difficult\u00e9 (APED)<\/a>, an association for parents of children with learning difficulties on Montreal\u2019s South Shore. \u201cBased on our discussions with other agencies and specialists, we believe our kids are probably two years behind in school. The lockdown didn\u2019t help. Children were deprived of socialization and the masks affected children with language difficulties.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sylvianne Gagn\u00e9 reports that the requests they receive are increasingly about integrating children into classrooms. They can\u2019t see how education will affect the rest of their lives.\u201d<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The widespread labour shortage in the retail sector is also affecting academic perseverance. \u201cMore students are working and they&#8217;re starting younger than before. Obviously, that affects their grades,\u201d says Andr\u00e9e-Anne Primeau, who leads social and academic perseverance projects at the Maison des Jeunes l\u2019Adomissile in Saint-R\u00e9mi, a rural community in the Les Jardins-de-Napierville regional county municipality. Primeau points out that the lack of staff in the classroom, both teachers and social workers, also has a negative impact on children&#8217;s schooling.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/section>\n\n\n\n<section class=\"vtx-tab-item\" id=\"tab-strongstrongprioritizing-the-integration-of-immigrant-children-strong-strong\"><div class=\"vtx-tab-item__inner\">\n<p>In Laval, the community agency <a href=\"http:\/\/In Laval, the community agency Diapason-Jeunesse is addressing another challenge. \u201cWe estimate that 90% of the young people we help come from immigrant families, and 65% were born outside Canada,\u201d says executive director Chantal Lacha\u00eene.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Diapason-Jeunesse<\/a> is addressing another challenge. \u201cWe estimate that 90% of the young people we help come from immigrant families, and 65% were born outside Canada,\u201d says executive director Chantal Lacha\u00eene.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Diapason-Jeunesse supports young people from Laval\u2019s most disadvantaged schools. \u201cThe parents are asked to fill out a form with information about their socioeconomic situation, so we know that poverty is widespread among the families we support,\u201d says Lacha\u00eene.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The agency\u2019s staff face a three-pronged challenge: they must help kids integrate into their schools and also into society while maintaining relationships with their families, who often have low incomes and may speak neither French nor English.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur Passeport pour ma r\u00e9ussite program provides financial support,\u201d explains Lacha\u00eene. \u201cFor example, we distribute public transit tickets and give lunch boxes to the young people who come to us after school for help with their homework.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns are-vertically-aligned-center is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-vertically-aligned-center is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:12%\"><div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.centraide-mtl.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Familles_faible_revenu_Icones_centraide-03.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-61200\" width=\"141\" height=\"141\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.centraide-mtl.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Familles_faible_revenu_Icones_centraide-03.png 300w, https:\/\/www.centraide-mtl.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Familles_faible_revenu_Icones_centraide-03-150x150.png 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 141px) 100vw, 141px\" \/><\/figure><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-vertically-aligned-center is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:89%\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-left is-style-little-title\">According to the latest census, there are 36,405 children aged 6&nbsp;to&nbsp;17&nbsp;living in low-income families in the Montreal metropolitan area.<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-vertically-aligned-center is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><a id=\"_msocom_1\"><\/a><\/p>\n<\/div><\/section>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:45px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Helping young people succeed in school and in society is a core component of Centraide of Greater Montreal\u2019s mission. The best way to fight poverty is to prevent it by supporting children and their families.
