{"id":54729,"date":"2023-02-27T16:35:53","date_gmt":"2023-02-27T21:35:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.centraide-mtl.org\/?p=54729"},"modified":"2023-03-10T13:45:36","modified_gmt":"2023-03-10T18:45:36","slug":"a-post-pandemic-deep-dive-into-motivation-and-academic-success","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.centraide-mtl.org\/en\/blog\/a-post-pandemic-deep-dive-into-motivation-and-academic-success\/","title":{"rendered":"A Post-Pandemic Deep Dive into Motivation and Academic Success"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>At the start of the health crisis in March 2020, we assumed, based on the expertise of the community agencies we support, that it would significantly impact young people and affect their motivation and academic success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The pandemic indeed caused major hardships, with many young people facing social isolation, stress and anxiety, online learning issues, family difficulties, and other major challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Three years on, getting accurate data about student dropout rates in Quebec is still difficult, as the Minist\u00e8re de l\u2019\u00c9ducation has not yet released official figures for 2021 or 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, we do know that the pandemic has affected some determinants of academic perseverance, such as self-esteem, motivation and engagement, the valuing of education and parental support, and school climate, which in turn could have impacts on the dropout rate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Montreal Hooked on School has put forward some hypotheses about school outcomes that need to be validated over time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:51px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><strong>Hypotheses to be validated:<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Small children have been particularly affected by the pandemic, and this could impact the rest of their school careers.<\/li><li>Teen mental health has been shaken by the crisis, which could have an impact on their readiness to learn.<\/li><li>Long-term effects could be experienced by students who were having trouble before the crisis and by those who fell even further behind and are struggling because of these delays.<\/li><li>More young people may decide to put off further or higher education.<\/li><\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"is-style-little-title wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong>Enter the Youth Success Project<\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In February 2022, in light of the ongoing pandemic and young people\u2019s disintegrating motivation, the urgency to act became all too clear, prompting the Centraides of Quebec to strike a major partnership with the <strong>Lucie and Andr\u00e9 Chagnon Foundation<\/strong>. Operated by Centraide of Greater Montreal, the <strong>Youth Success Project <\/strong>has supported over a hundred agencies and projects to promote the self-esteem, motivation, and academic perseverance of young people in difficulty throughout Quebec.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"is-style-little-title wp-block-heading\">$1.9 million has been invested to support youth, and each Centraide in Quebec is free to put these funds toward its territory\u2019s specific issues.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"is-style-little-title wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong>Montreal initiatives<\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In Greater Montreal, this funding has served as an additional mechanism to support communities. The <strong>Youth Success Project<\/strong> has driven the development of new relationships with emerging agencies or projects and helped them fill service gaps and needs in some neighbourhoods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:47px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Agencies and projects supported by the Youth Success Project in Greater students lose academic knowledge and skills over the summer break. As a complement to the street outreach done by <strong>Macadam Sud<\/strong>, this project spearheaded by <strong>La Maison des jeunes de Boucherville \u2013 La Piaule<\/strong> reaches young people aged 6 to 18 directly where they hang out to create meaningful connections, proactively prevent problems, and refer them to available resources. The project also reached many young people who do not go to community agencies, have little to no knowledge of available resources, and were in very vulnerable situations.<\/p>\n<p>Now carried out by about 15 agencies that have incorporated community outreach into their intervention approach, the project has led to a change in practices that has benefited not only these young people but also the agencies involved. Weekly meetings to track issues, training, and moments of discussion create bonds of trust between these partners, who are all working toward the same goal of helping youth.<\/p>\n aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/i>\n        <\/button>\n        <div class=\"faq-item__content accordion-content entry-content\" style=\"display:none;\" id=\"faq-69e857f039740\">\n          <div class=\"entry-content alignfull\">\n          \n                          <p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-54694\" community action in C\u00f4te-des-Neiges, this neighbourhood has few resources for 12- to 18-year-olds. <strong>Philo-Boxe<\/strong> fills this gap by gearing its services to young people mainly from immigrant backgrounds who are facing specific issues: how they fit in with their new society while belonging to their society of origin, family tensions due to the transformation of traditional roles, and more.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Philo-Boxe<\/strong> gives them a space for philosophical discussion about themes that address identity, emotions, and values, while a boxing class lets them apply life skills such as openness, respect, mutual support, commitment, personal excellence, humility, effective communication, and healthy emotion management.<\/p>\n                                  <\/div>\n        <\/div>\n      <\/div>\n      <\/section>\n  \n\n\n<div style=\"height:56px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center is-style-middle-title\"><strong>1 out of 5 people receives our help. <br>5 out of 5 people
