School continues to be a place of intense inequality, as students\u2019 chances of academic success depend on whether they come from a disadvantaged or well-off area. Immense challenges also await students from immigrant backgrounds and especially those recently arrived to the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity is-style-dots\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading is-style-little-title\"><strong><strong>Poverty and academic success: A concerning issue<\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><strong>Many students from disadvantaged backgrounds:<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Are less prepared for kindergarten (understanding instructions, expressing themselves clearly, holding a pencil correctly, tying their shoes)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Struggle more to adapt and learn (language delays, hyperactivity, behavioural problems)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Have poorer grades<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Often drop out early<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Are less likely to get their diploma<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><strong><strong>Montreal has a high number of young people who live in poverty<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>On the Island of Montreal, 23% of youths under 18 come from a low-income family.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>84% of Quebec\u2019s primary students who live below the low-income cut-off reside in Montreal.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center is-style-little-title has-large-font-size\"><strong>The percentage of young Montreal students who drop out before getting their high school diploma is 2.5 times higher in disadvantaged areas compared to more well-off neighbourhoods.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:13px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.centraide-mtl.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Separateur_corpo_1-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-44527\" width=\"367\" height=\"51\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.centraide-mtl.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Separateur_corpo_1-1.png 609w, https:\/\/www.centraide-mtl.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Separateur_corpo_1-1-300x42.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 367px) 100vw, 367px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The 350 community agencies that we support implement strategies and actions to fight poverty and social exclusion in Greater Montreal&#8217;s neighbourhoods and include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.centraide-mtl.org\/en\/directory-of-agencies-and-projects\/\">55 agencies<\/a> that specifically target educational success. They encourage academic perseverance and provide support to teens who have dropped out of school.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-heading is-style-little-title\"><strong><strong>Immigration and academic success: A journey rife with challenges<\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><strong>Many students from immigrant backgrounds:<sup>1<\/sup><\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Have more academic delays (37% start high school one year behind while 8% start two or more years behind)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Don\u2019t have a diploma even seven years after starting high school (45% of foreign-born students)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><strong>What\u2019s more, most students in Montreal&#8217;s schools are from immigrant backgrounds<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>67% of public-school students on the Island of Montreal have an immigrant background<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>26% were born in another country (1<sup>st<\/sup> generation), and 41% were born in Quebec but either one or both parents were foreign-born (2<sup>nd<\/sup> generation)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>50% don\u2019t speak French at home<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center is-style-little-title has-large-font-size\"><strong>On the island of Montreal over half of foreign-born students live in disadvantaged areas (51%).<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:13px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" &nbsp;these youths and their families directly impacts their school careers and academic success. This is a major challenge that schools can\u2019t face alone without the support of community agencies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Many <a href=\"https:\/\/www.centraide-mtl.org\/en\/directory-of-agencies-and-projects\/#filters\">agencies that welcome and integrate immigrants and refugees<\/a> support young people and their families along their immigration journey, facilitate their inclusion in Quebec society, and familiarize them with the Quebec school system and with helpful resources.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns are-vertically-aligned-center has-white-background-color has-background is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:5%\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-vertically-aligned-center is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:80%\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-right is-style-little-title\"><strong>Isolated families need support<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-right\">Poverty can lead to marginalization and social exclusion, which can in turn prevent students from fully participating in school life. Family isolation can also undermine children&#8217;s development and socialization. They act as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.centraide-mtl.org\/en\/blog\/a-safety-net-for-families\/\">safety net for vulnerable families<\/a> in all of Greater Montreal&#8217;s neighbourhoods.
