Without changing their habits, Quebec families will have paid more this year for basic needs, such as food.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Sylvain Charlebois<\/strong>, Senior Director of Dalhousie University&#8217;s Agri-Food Analytics Lab, estimates that the average household will have paid 5% more for groceries this year\u2014or about $700 more annually\u2014which is the largest increase in history when it comes to food costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:58px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"792\" height=\"416\" src=\"https:\/\/www.centraide-mtl.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Visuel-Texte_Cout-Alimentation_EN.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-33616\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.centraide-mtl.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Visuel-Texte_Cout-Alimentation_EN.jpg 792w, https:\/\/www.centraide-mtl.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Visuel-Texte_Cout-Alimentation_EN-300x158.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.centraide-mtl.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Visuel-Texte_Cout-Alimentation_EN-768x403.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 792px) 100vw, 792px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<div style=\"height:16px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"is-style-little-title wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong>An increase that is difficult to digest<\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Low-income families are particularly affected by this spike in prices, as they already spend a much higher portion of their budget on food.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For years now, and especially since the beginning of the pandemic, more and more people have been using emergency food services, such as workers who have seen their incomes drop or people who have become isolated due to their age or health condition (disability, mental health problem, etc.). Even the middle class is losing purchasing power year after year. However, food is not the only thing that has increased in price, as people also have to find money in their budgets to cope with higher costs of housing, transportation, and other essentials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:24px\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-vertically-aligned-center is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-text-align-center is-style-little-title has-text-dark-color has-text-color wp-block-heading\"><strong>What is an average household? <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"has-text-align-center is-style-little-title has-text-dark-color has-text-color wp-block-heading\">A family of two adults (31 to 50 years old)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"has-text-align-center is-style-little-title has-text-dark-color has-text-color wp-block-heading\"><strong>+<\/strong> two children, one boy (14-18) and one girl (9-13).<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity is-style-wide\"\/>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:78px\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"is-style-little-title wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong><strong>Food security for all<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>For decades, Centraide and the agencies it supports have been keeping a close eye on this situation and taking action to ensure food security in Greater Montreal. The focus has been on strategies ranging from food donations (which have been scaled up in recent months due to the pandemic) to longer-term and lasting solutions to help people eat better at a lower cost, such as collective gardens, group purchases, community grocery stores, and collective kitchens. In the post-pandemic period, a number of these initiatives put on hold due to health measures will be relaunched.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:21px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"is-style-little-title wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong>Emergency mode<\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>At the height of the health crisis, over <strong>2.2 million meals<\/strong> and <strong>200,000 food baskets<\/strong> were delivered to individuals and families in need thanks to our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.centraide-mtl.org\/en\/covid-19-response\/centraide-covid-19-emergency-fund\/\">COVID-19 Emergency Fund<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:21px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"is-style-little-title wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong>Recurring support<\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Centraide helps fund <strong>95 community agencies and projects<\/strong> that provide food security to thousands of vulnerable people as a way to foster independence, contribute to sustainable development, and fight poverty.&nbsp; An annual investment of $5.9 million makes Centraide the largest food-security funder in Greater Montreal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In two blog posts, discover <a href=\"https:\/\/www.centraide-mtl.org\/en\/blog\/vert-lharmonie-transforming-a-mercier-ouest-hlm-for-the-better\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"33524\">Vert l\u2019Harmonie<\/a>, an urban agriculture project that is transforming a Mercier-Ouest HLM for the better, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.centraide-mtl.org\/en\/blog\/regroupement-partage-new-and-ambitious-food-security-solutions\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"33514\">Regroupement Partage,<\/a> an exemplary agency that has stood out over the past months by showing flexibility to make changes to meet increased food-security needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:39px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The cost of living is constantly going up.
