{"id":1126,"date":"2020-04-03T09:28:00","date_gmt":"2020-04-03T13:28:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.centraide-mtl.org\/?p=1126"},"modified":"2021-04-15T11:51:15","modified_gmt":"2021-04-15T15:51:15","slug":"feeding-greater-montreal-keeping-people-fed-during-the-crisis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.centraide-mtl.org\/en\/blog\/feeding-greater-montreal-keeping-people-fed-during-the-crisis\/","title":{"rendered":"Feeding Greater Montreal : Keeping people fed during the crisis"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>While many people are using their extra time at home to cook, many more wonder how they are going to feed their families today and for the coming weeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even before COVID-19 struck, Greater Montreal was home to 614,000 people experiencing poverty and social exclusion and 200,000 people experiencing food insecurity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before the pandemic, all of these people could turn to the hundreds of community agencies in Greater Montreal\u2019s boroughs, cities and neighbourhoods for their food needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the COVID-19 crisis has forced these agencies to suspend a lot of their services. The situation has put an even greater strain on vulnerable people who can no longer access the same support, while the number of people in need has increased due to confinement measures and job losses. Overall, 50% of calls to 211 relate to food. They are also focusing on making food baskets instead of letting clients freely move through the store to do their grocery shopping.<\/li><\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Some agencies are<strong>&nbsp;giving out prepaid cards to families with young children,&nbsp;<\/strong>as some essential products have limited inventories (baby formula, diapers, etc.).<\/li><\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Five food supply sites run by community agencies have been temporarily set up in five key Montreal areas to meet the&nbsp;<strong>desperate needs of the homeless:&nbsp;<\/strong>Place \u00c9milie-Gamelin (Le Sac \u00e0 dos), Cabot Square (Resilience Montreal), Place du Canada (Old Brewery Mission), Ar\u00e9na Francis-Bouillon (L\u2019Anonyme) and Parc Jeanne-Mance (Plein Milieu).<\/li><\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Mobile food distribution<\/strong>&nbsp;resources are being deployed from east to west to&nbsp;<strong>directly reach people in need.<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Testimony<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"580\" height=\"300\" src=\"http:\/\/www.centraide-mtl.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/6e007a61f3cc4b35e4a65d5110db23e5.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1133\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.centraide-mtl.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/6e007a61f3cc4b35e4a65d5110db23e5.png 580w, https:\/\/www.centraide-mtl.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/6e007a61f3cc4b35e4a65d5110db23e5-300x155.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 580px) 100vw, 580px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>We are constantly working to analyze&nbsp;and respond to requests to the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.centraide-mtl.org\/en\/covid-19\/emergency-fund\/\"><strong>Emergency Fund<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;as quickly as possible.&nbsp;We are amazed by agencies\u2019 ability to quickly change course and find new ways to help isolated and vulnerable people in this unprecedented situation. We can see an almost sense the real-time impact of Centraide&#8217;s chain of generosity on people. Donors and agencies have responded to the call. It\u2019s a good thing they\u2019re there!<\/p><p>We\u2019re also part of the crisis cells in Montreal, in Laval and on the South Shore together with public health authorities, municipalities and the community sector. Food aid is always at the top of our priority list. We\u2019re paying close attention to the situation of isolated seniors and people experiencing homelessness. How do you apply stay-at-home orders when you live on the street? We also have to think about vulnerable people at risk of violence, such as women, children and people with mental health problems. The vulnerable become even more so in times like these.\u201d<\/p><cite><strong>Mario R\u00e9gis<\/strong><br>Vice President, Social Development, Centraide of Greater Montreal<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Troops of people on the front lines to feed Greater Montreal<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Emergency Fund is supporting a number of food security agencies, such as La Tabl\u00e9e des Chefs and La Cantine pour tous, which will play crucial roles in the weeks to come.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">La Tabl\u00e9e des Chefs: 800,000 meals for isolated people<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"276\" height=\"140\" src=\"http:\/\/www.centraide-mtl.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/0e7335d40eeb21e373fb3e4b14608061.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-525\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Restaurants are closed and cooks are off work, but more and more people have food needs. Given this sad situation, La Tabl\u00e9e des Chefs and its partners are launching Les Cuisines Solidaires, a large-scale effort to fill the fridges of the Food Banks of Quebec by producing over 800,000 meals that will be given to vulnerable people. Many renowned chefs have answered the call and are mobilizing their teams. Some will reopen their restaurant kitchens just for this initiative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">La Cantine pour tous: 1,500 meals per day for the homeless<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"276\" height=\"140\" src=\"https:\/\/www.centraide-mtl.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/03e3aa3125d497d72262c44944138a75.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-527\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>In collaboration with Cuisine collective Hochelaga-Maisonneuve, Resto Plateau, Traiteur BIS and the Corbeille Bordeaux-Cartierville, La Cantine pour tous will coordinate meal production for five food sites set up temporarily in five key areas in Montreal to meet the pressing needs of the homeless.
