Childhood experiences can have repercussions that continue to reverberate long after their school years.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In every part of Greater Montreal, Centraide supports community agencies that work with children and their parents at various points along their trajectory. Over the years, one thing has become clear: the earlier a child receives support, the more lasting the effects can be.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading is-style-little-title\"><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong>Why is childhood such an important time?<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>From birth\u2014and even beforehand\u2014a child\u2019s physical, cognitive, social and emotional development is shaped by their experiences.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Specialists consider this to be a particularly formative period. Early childhood\u2014ages\u202f0 to\u202f5\u2014and the elementary school years\u2014ages 6 to 11\u2014are when experiences and support tend to have the greatest impact. Long before they start school, some children are already more likely to experience developmental difficulties.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By the time they enter kindergarten, 28.1% of children in Montreal exhibit vulnerability in at least one area of development. This percentage reaches 33.9% in Laval and 29.1% in Mont\u00e9r\u00e9gie.<sup>2<\/sup>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The gaps widen in economically disadvantaged families. Single-parent, immigrant, blended, multigenerational and 2SLGBTQIA+ families, as well as families with children who have special needs, all experience different realities. They do not necessarily have access to the same resources to help them cope with everyday challenges.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some have multiple obstacles to face. Low income, social isolation, immigration-related challenges and language barriers can make it more difficult to access housing, services and the support they need.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Close to a third of the parents living in Greater Montreal say their household income is not enough to cover such basic needs as housing, food and clothing.
