An agency active in the heart of the Plateau-Mont-Royal, Plein Milieu uses an approach based on compassion, harm reduction, and personalized support to help young people and adults who use drugs and who are experiencing or at risk of experiencing homelessness. The agency combines street outreach, school-based actions, local partnerships, and access to basic services to meet the needs of a neighbourhood where homelessness is becoming more and more visible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A front-line agency that knows the field<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The increased presence of highly vulnerable people on the streets, in the alleys, in the parks, and in the public spaces of the Plateau-Mont-Royal shows why sustained community initiatives are so important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For over thirty years, Plein Milieu teams have been reaching out to people where they are, without making them attend appointments and without imposing conditions or passing judgment. The agency also takes concrete action to benefit the entire neighbourhood by collecting discarded drug paraphernalia to keep public spaces safe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their overall approach is rooted in a thorough understanding of the realities faced by people experiencing homelessness, such as isolation, mental health issues, substance use, housing instability, and difficulties navigating public service systems.<\/p>\n\n\n

Accessible essential services<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

At the day and evening centre on Saint-Denis Street, people first encounter a welcoming environment where they can get some rest. They have access to showers, laundry facilities, and food and clothing assistance, and they can meet with a counsellor to talk about steps to deal with their medical, administrative, or housing issues. The goal is to guide and support each person so they can stabilize their lives at their own pace.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n

School-based prevention<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

As an extension of Plein Milieu\u2019s work with young people aged 12 to 17, and as a way to strengthen ties with educational institutions, the agency\u2019s community workers lead prevention workshops related to sexual health and substance abuse at local schools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Collaborations that strengthen social cohesion<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The agency also draws from local collaborations, such as with L\u2019Oranger, a solidarity network of business owners from the Plateau-Mont-Royal who want to actively promote harmony in the neighbourhood. These businesses open their doors to vulnerable people to provide essential services; for example, people can get a glass of water, access washrooms, get warm, charge their phones, or even enjoy a coffee or meal paid for by a customer through a pending donation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These businesses are easy to spot from an orange window sticker clearly indicating that they welcome anyone in need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Plein Milieu recognized for its social relevance<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2026, Centraide of Greater Montreal awarded Plein Milieu the Solidaires Social Relevance for Plein Milieu se loge, <\/em>a project to acquire and convert the building at 4677-4675 Saint-Denis Street into a safe and inclusive space that provides essential services and personalized support to people in or at risk of a situation of homelessness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What makes this project unique is its integrated approach with marginalized people, its sustainable vision, and its significant social impact in the neighbourhood thanks to solid collaborations with partners.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n
