{"id":101494,"date":"2025-11-04T15:19:00","date_gmt":"2025-11-04T20:19:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.centraide-mtl.org\/?p=101494"},"modified":"2025-12-15T15:38:27","modified_gmt":"2025-12-15T20:38:27","slug":"montreals-perfect-storm-how-centraide-is-helping-a-city-under-pressure","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.centraide-mtl.org\/en\/blog\/montreals-perfect-storm-how-centraide-is-helping-a-city-under-pressure\/","title":{"rendered":"Montreal\u2019s perfect storm: How Centraide is helping a city under pressure"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center is-style-little-title\"><strong>By Mark Stachiew<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Centraide plays a crucial role in helping agencies address the increased complexity of needs faced by vulnerable people in Greater Montreal.<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>In the aftermath of the pandemic, not only has the demand for aid from the most vulnerable people in the communities of Greater Montreal skyrocketed, but the profile of those seeking help has also changed significantly, making the situation more complex for the community agencies serving them.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"container\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text is-stacked-on-mobile is-vertically-aligned-center\" style=\"grid-template-columns:31% auto\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"305\" height=\"305\" src=\"https:\/\/www.centraide-mtl.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/Felix-Antoire-Verronneau-1.jpg\" alt=\"Felix-Antoine V\u00e9ronneau\" class=\"wp-image-92470 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.centraide-mtl.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/Felix-Antoire-Verronneau-1.jpg 305w, https:\/\/www.centraide-mtl.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/Felix-Antoire-Verronneau-1-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.centraide-mtl.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/Felix-Antoire-Verronneau-1-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 305px) 100vw, 305px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>\u201cMontreal is in a perfect storm of facing a housing crisis, homelessness, a food security crisis, and, on top of that, we have multiple psychosocial issues such as mental health and social isolation,\u201d says <strong>F\u00e9lix-Antoine V\u00e9ronneau<\/strong>, Centraide\u2019s vice-president, social development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>To underscore how dire the food insecurity crisis alone has become, he notes that Quebec\u2019s food insecurity rate jumped from 13 per cent to nearly 20 per cent from 2021 to 2024. In addition, he said that the demand for food aid in the Montreal area jumped by 63 per cent in just two years, with 500,000 requests now filled each month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although those on social assistance are still the ones most affected by food insecurity, V\u00e9ronneau says that one in five households that turn to food banks are employed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s an example of how the traditional profile of clients aided by the hundreds of agencies supported by Centraide is changing, forcing them to find new ways to address needs that don\u2019t fall within their original missions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Beyond providing funding, V\u00e9ronneau says that Centraide plays a crucial role in helping agencies address the increasing complexity of needs faced by vulnerable people. This can be through supporting skill and leadership training for those working at community agencies, supporting and sharing innovative ideas to reduce poverty in the region, or by simply sharing data.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"container\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text is-stacked-on-mobile is-vertically-aligned-center\" style=\"grid-template-columns:40% auto\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/www.centraide-mtl.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Enjeux-de-lheure-1024x576.png\" alt=\"\u00c9picerie Maison Entraide\" class=\"wp-image-81151 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.centraide-mtl.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Enjeux-de-lheure-1024x576.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.centraide-mtl.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Enjeux-de-lheure-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/www.centraide-mtl.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Enjeux-de-lheure-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/www.centraide-mtl.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Enjeux-de-lheure-1536x864.png 1536w, https:\/\/www.centraide-mtl.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Enjeux-de-lheure-410x230.png 410w, https:\/\/www.centraide-mtl.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Enjeux-de-lheure-728x410.png 728w, https:\/\/www.centraide-mtl.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Enjeux-de-lheure-865x486.png 865w, https:\/\/www.centraide-mtl.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Enjeux-de-lheure.png 1920w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>One example of an agency on the front lines of Montreal\u2019s food insecurity crisis is Multicaf, an organization dedicated to providing food support and other resources for vulnerable individuals in C\u00f4te-des-Neiges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur users often face multiple challenges at once: mental health issues, substance use, isolation, financial insecurity, and that calls for personalized, sustained interventions,\u201d says Jean-S\u00e9bastien Patrice, Multicaf\u2019s executive director.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>&#8220;In 2022, we had two social workers at Multicaf. Today, it&#8217;s a team of 10 people, plus a coordinator. That clearly shows how much more complex the needs have become.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The addition of this new team has created positive results. The median length of time Multicaf\u2019s clients need to be supported has been reduced from 17 months to eight.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"609\" height=\"85\" src=\"https:\/\/www.centraide-mtl.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Separateur_corpo_1-1.png\" alt=\"S\u00e9parateur bonhommes Centraide\" class=\"wp-image-44527\" style=\"width:459px;height:64px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.centraide-mtl.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Separateur_corpo_1-1.png 609w, https:\/\/www.centraide-mtl.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Separateur_corpo_1-1-300x42.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 609px) 100vw, 609px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div style=\"height:21px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Another agency tackling food insecurity in Montreal is Resto Plateau. While the group has traditionally served the majority of its daily meals to seniors, the organization has adapted to a changing reality, including a more diverse clientele and an increase in homelessness in the area.
