In Saint-Michel-Est, nearly one in three residents (30%) is under 18. Like many neighborhoods in the north of the island, Saint-Michel ranks among the Montreal neighborhoods with the highest proportion of young residents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-white-background-color has-background\"><strong><strong>\ud83d\udc69\u200d\ud83d\udc67<\/strong> <strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong>Single-parent families \u2013 more prevalent in Saint-Michel-Est<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><br><br>Families are more often headed by a single parent in Saint-Michel (37%) than in Montreal (31%). This rate reaches 39% in Saint-Michel-Est, while Saint-Michel-Ouest has the highest number in absolute terms (1,450&nbsp;families). In total, 3,415&nbsp;single-parent families reside in the neighborhood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-white-background-color has-background\"><strong><strong><strong>\ud83c\udfda\ufe0f<\/strong><\/strong> <strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong>Poverty \u2013 above the Montreal average<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><br><br>13% of the neighborhood\u2019s population (7,610&nbsp;people) live on low income, higher than the Montreal average (11%). Rates vary between 12% and 15% across sectors, with a large concentration in Saint-Michel-Sud (3,215&nbsp;people). Despite lower levels of poverty in some areas, many residents have modest incomes and remain in a precarious situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-white-background-color has-background\"><strong><strong>\u270f\ufe0f<\/strong> <strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong>Low educational attainment (without a high school diploma) \u2013 pronounced<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><br><br>Nearly one in four adults aged 25&nbsp;to&nbsp;64 (24%) does not have a high school diploma, more than double the Montreal average (9%). The rate reaches 31% in Saint-Michel-Est. After Montr\u00e9al-Nord, Saint-Michel has the second-largest number of undereducated adults in Montreal, with 7,500&nbsp;people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-white-background-color has-background\"><strong><strong>\ud83c\udf0e<\/strong> <strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong>Immigrant population and asylum seekers \u2013 strong presence<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><br><br>46% of the neighborhood\u2019s population (26,450&nbsp;people) are immigrants, compared with 33% in Montreal. In the East and West sectors, this proportion rises to 49%. The West sector has the largest number of immigrants (10,930&nbsp;people). Saint-Michel is also the third-ranking neighborhood on the island for asylum seekers, with 3,005&nbsp;people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-white-background-color has-background\"><strong><strong>\ud83d\udc68\ud83c\udffe\u200d\ud83e\udd1d\u200d\ud83d\udc68\ud83c\udffc<\/strong> <strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong>Diversity \u2013 high representation of visible minorities<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><br><br>Residents belonging to a visible minority group make up 65% of the neighborhood\u2019s population, 71% in the West sector and 76% in the East sector, compared with 38% in Montreal.
