“I used to be afraid people would judge me because of my disability.”Maxime found a Centraide supported association that allows people like him to take part in a variety of activities.
Maxime has an intellectual disability. He attended specialized classes throughout his schooling — until the age of 24, when he was no longer eligible to remain in the education system.
Maxime is now 26 years old. He and his parents found a Centraide supported association that allows people like him to take part in a variety of activities. This organization’s mission is to help people with intellectual disabilities reach their full personal and social potential, through activities that promote independence and autonomy.
Thanks to this association, Maxime travelled to an international cooperative in Nicaragua, and he hopes to take part in another international cooperation project, this time in Africa. He now volunteers once a week, and he’s hoping to find a part-time job soon. It’s easier for him to interact with others, now, and he’s no longer afraid of being judged for being different.
