Montreal business leaders to head up Centraide Campaign 2008
Montreal, June 11, 2008 - Centraide of Greater Montreal's 2008 fundraising campaign will be co-chaired by two recognized leaders of the business community, Richard B. Evans, Chief Executive of Rio Tinto Alcan, and Jacques Lamarre, President and Chief Executive Officer of SNC-Lavalin Group Inc. Mr. Evans and Mr. Lamarre will head up a Campaign Cabinet composed of 30 experienced executives from the business and institutional world. Their role will be to mobilize the corporate sector around the cause of Greater Montreal's most vulnerable people.
Centraide President and Executive Director, Michèle Thibodeau-DeGuire said she was delighted with the support of these two volunteers, who will have the task of visiting local business leaders to solicit a corporate donation and ensure they organize an employee workplace campaign.
"We are proud to be able to count on their key involvement in helping us to raise the money required to build stronger neighbourhoods, and make Greater Montreal into a great place to live," she declared.
Centraide's campaign, one of Quebec's most important fund-raising events, involves some 175,000 donors, 23,000 volunteers and 2,300 partner corporations who are dedicated to helping 500,000 people in need. The goal of this year's campaign will be announced on October 8 on the occasion of Centraide's March of 1,000 Umbrellas through downtown Montreal. Last year's campaign raised $54 million to support 360 community agencies serving the Island of Montreal, Laval and communities on the South Shore. These agencies support our most vulnerable fellow citizens, particularly families and youth, seniors, new immigrants and persons with disabilities.
