Action Communiterre and Spectre de rue
In 2005, Action Communiterre, Victory Garden Network Program and Spectre de rue, project TAPAJ (alternative work paid daily) won ex-aequo the Agnes C. Higgins Award, which is granted once a year to recognize outstanding innovation on the part of a Centraide supported agency in meeting the social needs of the community.
Victory Garden Network is an association of 18 collective vegetable gardens in Notre Dame de Grace. Montreal's first collective gardening project, it has been in operation for ten years. The project mobilizes 150 direct participants a year and reaches about 3,700 other people through related activities. It helps people in precarious circumstances by promoting social solidarity, building community food security, and providing access to healthy food through collective gardens and various urban agricultural projects.
Project TAPAJ (alternative work paid daily) is a pre-social integration project aimed at street kids. It was established in 1999 following a field study conducted jointly by the City of Montreal's Sports, Recreation and Social Development Department and the agency Spectre de rue. While respecting young people's lifestyle, TAPAJ offers them access to daily paid work as an alternative to homelessness. The project is recognized for its effectiveness by local community agencies, residents, police and donor organizations.
