Volunteer Bureau of Montreal and Pro-gam, Center for intervention and research in conjugal and family violence

In April 2007, the Volunteer Bureau of Montreal and Pro-gam, Center for intervention and research in conjugal and family violence, were joint winners of the community agency prize (Agnes C. Higgins Award). The Agnes C. Higgins Award recognizes outstanding innovation on the part of an agency in meeting the social needs of the community.

Volunteer Bureau of Montreal

Founded in 1937, the Volunteer Bureau of Montreal was the first agency in Canada dedicated to promoting volunteering. This year it is celebrating 70 years of significant contribution to the community. The Bureau recruits, trains and coordinates volunteers in order to support Montreal’s community agencies. Every year, the Volunteer Bureau of Montreal interviews about 1,500 people in order to recruit volunteers for over 800 community agencies, a number which has doubled over the past ten years. It also refers about 7,000 people who need help to the community agencies best able to meet their particular needs. The Bureau is recognized as a pillar of Montreal’s volunteer movement. Centraide has supported the Volunteer Bureau of Montreal since 1974.

Pro-gam, Center for intervention and research in conjugal and family violence

Pro-gam is the pioneer organization in Quebec for intervening with violent men who behave abusively within the conjugal and family context. It also offers innovative solutions for ensuring the safety of battered spouses. For the past 25 years, Pro-gam has been working to prevent all forms of violence which affect our society and, more generally, it has been concerned about the psychosocial factors which surround this violence. Centraide of Greater Montreal supports the various information, prevention and awareness activities that Pro-gram organizes for women, youth, children and the general population. The agency also offers group therapy services to violent spouses, 24-hour a day “front-line” telephone assistance, crisis management, and an awareness program for Greater Montreal’s various cultural communities. By tackling the problem of violence, Pro-gram provides an essential service to our community. Centraide has supported Pro-gam since 1988.
