Four ways to give back for the holidays
The holiday season is a time for good thoughts and, better yet, good deeds for people and families in need. Want to do something that will give true meaning to Christmas this year? Here are four original things you can do:
Operation Christmas Stockings
Did you know that socks are the items most in demand and yet hardest to come by at homeless shelters? Instead of getting an umpteenth bottle of bubble bath, ask your guests to bring a pair of wool socks as a hostess gift. Donate your haul of warm socks to an agency that helps the homeless.
Let your dress shine one more time
We’re not ones to judge, as we’ve all bought a holiday outfit that we’ve worn only once! Instead of cluttering your closet with clothes you don’t wear anymore, you can give a girl who can’t afford a dress something fancy to wear to her prom. Many groups with Facebook pages collect second-hand dresses just for this purpose.
Give the gift of time
Some people suffer from isolation and loneliness, especially during the holidays. Want to donate a few hours a week to chat over a coffee or hot chocolate? Sometimes just being there makes a big difference! Contact the Centre d’action bénévole in your community for companionship opportunities.
A gift for Christmas, a gift for life!
What doesn’t lack during the holidays (or throughout the year) are a range of needs to be met. By giving to Centraide, you are supporting many agencies that effectively fight poverty and social exclusion.
