Since October 2005, Catherine Shvets has been offering academic support to a young allophone student from an immigrant family under the “Saturday school” program of the agency PROMIS. At 14 years of age, she is the youngest of the 120 volunteers serving in this individual tutorial program.
Born in Montreal of a Russian family, Catherine Shvets experienced difficulties herself in mastering a second language. Today, through her ongoing commitment to her young pupil, she serves as an example of citizen participation on the part of allophone youth. Creative, curious, dynamic, responsible, persevering and open-minded, she is an inspiration to her fellow volunteers and a symbol of hope for the academic success of allophone students. Centraide has supported PROMIS, an agency that helps and facilitates the social integration of newly arrived immigrants in the Côte-des-Neiges district, since 1993.
